CCSD maintains positive direction on AP tests

Students from Charleston County School District (CCSD) continued their improvement for the third consecutive year on Advanced Placement (AP). The national testing organization recently released results, and CCSD students scoring a “3” or higher (out of 5) on AP tests are up 4.0 percentage points from last year to 79.1 percent. That average is 9.1 percentage points (70.0) better than the state average.

The district continues to trend in a positive direction, increasing by 11.3 percentage points over the course of three years overall (67.8 in 2021 compared to 79.1 in 2024).

The district made gains from 2023 to 2024 in the following four major student groups, scoring a “3” or higher on AP tests:

  • Black – 38.1 to 46.1; 8.0 percentage point increase
  • Hispanic – 62.7 to 64.4; 1.7 percentage point increase
  • Other – 80.7 to 84.7; 4.0 percentage point increase
  • White – 77.9 to 82.1; 4.2 percentage point increase

Additional notes:

  • Black students have improved by 14.3 percentage points in three years (31.8 in 2021 compared to 46.1 this year).
  • CCSD students combined to take 6,603 AP exams during the 2023-2024 school year, 560 more than the previous school year.
  • All four major student groups (Black, Hispanic, Other, and White) participated in more AP tests than they did in the previous school year.
  • Of the 30 different AP courses/exams offered in CCSD, 14 of these had 90 percent or higher overall passing rates for students.
  • CCSD has 1,294 AP Scholars (more detailed list below) in 2024, an improvement of 186 from the previous year.
