SPARTANBURG, SC – August 5, 2011 – Youth from all over Spartanburg County have been invited to participate in the free Youth Leadership Summit to be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011. The primary purpose of the Summit is to encourage youth to develop leadership skills, make wise choices and become more involved in their community.
Taking place from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm at The Hangar, First Baptist Church, the Summit offers youth ages 11-17 motivational speakers and interactive workshops. The morning will kick-off with a State of the Youth Address delivered by County Councilman Michael Brown. Following, we will have special guest Spark Plug speak to the youth to get them energized for the day.
The sessions will focus on avoiding risky behaviors while encouraging advocacy of youth issues and volunteerism. Topics include: Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Issues, Community Involvement, Political Involvement, Leadership, Résumé Building, College & Scholarship Search, Arts & Activism, Going Green, and Healthy & Active Living.
The Summit will include an Educational Market featuring state colleges and universities, and youth-serving non-profits and organizations. Spartanburg’s own Imagine That!, a youth theatrical improv group, will perform throughout the day. Door prizes-including a Nintendo DS3, XBOX Kinect or an iPad-will be awarded, and the event includes a free pizza lunch.
