70 local creative enterprises open doors for free Columbia Open Studios Tour, presented by 701 CCA, April 2-3

March 28, 2016

Self-guided art studio tour spans City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties

Seventy local artists will open their working studios for the public during Columbia Open Studios, a signature event presented by 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA), on Saturday, April 2, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday, April 3, 12–6 p.m.

TOUR
In its sixth year, Columbia Open Studios is a free, self-guided tour of artists’ working studios spanning the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties.

Artists will open their studios – from gardens and garages to residential homes and warehouses – to share their techniques, tools and inspirations with tour-goers and offer the public a chance to purchase their artwork at no markup, which supports local cottage industries and contributes to the Midlands’ economy.

Artists’ media range from classic painting and sculpture to installation art, pottery, leatherworking, blacksmithing and more. With 70 artists (including 27 new participants), this year’s Columbia Open Studios, an offshoot of the national Open Studios arts phenomenon, is the largest yet.

Guests can plan their #ColaOpenStudios tour by picking up a printed, 32-page guidebook with maps and full artist list with sample works, or by viewing all information online at http://www.columbiaopenstudios.org.

PREVIEW PARTY
701 Center for Contemporary Art will host the official Columbia Open Studios Preview Party on Thursday, March 31, 7–9 p.m. at 701 CCA on the second floor of historic 701 Whaley. Guests will enjoy an exhibition of participating artists’ work while meeting the creators; complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and music by DJ Irv.
