What makes you different and better?

Dave Shaw, owner of Flying Napkins, a local ad agency, once owned Locals, a pizza place in Five Points where 27 other bars and restaurants were his competitors.

To stand out from the crowd, he tried tossing napkins into the air during key songs – to get the crowd excited and amp up the atmosphere. It worked.

Locals became the most popular place for drinks and big slice pizza. Patrons and employees would throw napkins, making the entertainment interactive.

You can guess who cleaned up later — in the restaurant and at the cash register.

Dave had Locals for over eight years before he and his partners sold it, but the idea behind still remains–think differently.

In a sea of competition, it isn’t always necessary to launch a million dollar campaign and media blitz, Dave told us.

Sometimes, you just need something different, creative or memorable.

It worked for him and can work for your business. You have to:

• Research your competition.
• Analyze your own business.
• Know your target demographics.
• Find your own “Flying Napkin.”

When you do, the sky is the limit. And chances are, you won’t need a ridiculous advertising/media budget to pull it off.
