The “Hit by a Bus” Strategy

August 28, 2017

By Jerry Bellune

Randall Savely sent us a warning note recently.
Randall is with our state press association.
His note applies to any business using the internet.
He asked who controls access to our digital accounts.
Who is the administrative contact for our website?
How about the technical contact?
Who owns and has charge of your domain name?

Why does this matter? Randall asks.
Because you can lose access to your website.
You can lose control of your domain name.
What if your employee who is the contact leaves you?

Randall calls this the “hit by a bus” strategy.
What if your tekkie is hit by a bus on the way home?
Do you know how to access your website?
Do you use an outside company to host your accounts? What happens if they go bankrupt?
Do you have a plan for accessing your website?
Do you have regular backups as a last resort?

Do you control your employee email accounts?
If you lose a sales rep, can you access the rep’s email?
Do your employees set up their email accounts?
Do you have their account names and passwords?
A former employee might contact your customers.
Be sure you control employee email accounts.
You need to be able to go into their accounts.
If you haven’t done it yet, do it now.

How about your company bank accounts?
Software registrations? Social media accounts?
Set policies for how you handle digital information.
Losing access to digital accounts can do you harm.
