The only way to motivate yourself
August 1, 2017By Jerry Bellune
We started our company in 1992 with excitement.
We were starting something new and risky.
Pioneers in almost everything feel that way.
It’s like the beginning of a love affair.
Then it settles into a marriage.
How do you maintain that sense of adventure?
How do you help everyone remain enthusiastic?
How do you keep a sense of mission, not just a job?
You can’t motivate your people.
Only they can do that for themselves.
What you can do is challenge everyone all the time.
By challenging yourself, you set an example.
Constantly strive for product improvement.
Constantly challenge everyone else to do the same.
Talk with everyone daily. What are they up to?
What problems do they face? How can you help?
We meet regularly to plan new projects.
The ideas flow fast and furiously.
We list them, assess them and review them.
Those that promise higher payoffs get top priority.
Other may be nice to do but lack urgency.
They go down the list. High priority ones get done.
The others may wait until the next quarter.
Make it a habit to plan regularly with your team.
We meet weekly to assess where we are.
We also share what everyone is doing.
That gives us a chance to offer suggestions.
Or to raise questions and work out answers.
Set up and share your company goals.
This includes a narrative of what you want to do.
Include why and what it will achieve.
Every goal needs to have a reason and a purpose.
Then list each step needed to fulfill the mission.
For each step you must include:
• Who is responsible for handling each step.
• What their deadline is for completion.
