Wilkes Law Firm attorneys serving in leadership roles for the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association

The Wilkes Law Firm, P.A., announced that two of the Firm’s attorneys have been elected to leadership positions in the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association (SCDTAA).
Derham Cole, Jr., who practices in the Firm’s Spartanburg office, currently is serving as a member of the SCDTAA Board of Directors, Chairman of the Judicial Committee, and a member of the Marketing Committee.
Derek Newberry, from the Firm’s Charleston office, has been elected to serve as Vice President of the SCDTAA Young Lawyers Division.
SCDTAA is an organization that promotes justice, professionalism, and integrity in the civil justice system by bringing together attorneys dedicated to the defense of civil actions. Mike Wilkes, the Firm’s managing shareholder, is a past president of SCDTAA. He said, “The firm has a long history of involvement in and support of the SCDTAA. I’m confident that Derham (Cole) and Derek (Newberry) will make great contributions in their roles this year.”
Cole’s law practice focuses in the areas of business and commercial transactions, as well as business litigation. In addition to practicing law, Cole has represented District 32 (Spartanburg) in the South Carolina House of Representatives since 2008. He has served as Chairman of the General Laws Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee and currently sits on the budget-writing Ways & Means Committee. Cole also is the current Chairman of the Spartanburg County Legislative Delegation.
Newberry’s practice areas include professional liability defense, construction litigation, commercial litigation, personal injury defense, and complex product defect litigation. In addition to his law practice, Derek presently is participating in Leadership Charleston, a comprehensive year long community leadership program provided by the Charleston County Chamber of Commerce.
