Greenville’s Only Outdoor Ice Skating Rink to Open Holiday Season

United Community Bank Ice on Main is pleased to announce that Greenville’s only outdoor skating rink will open on Friday, November 18, 2016. The rink will be open seven days a week, including holidays, through January 16, 2017. In the past five years, more than 70,000 skaters have laced up, and countless more have enjoyed the iconic winter tradition as they visit downtown Greenville.

“We are glad to kick off the holiday season on Main Street with Greenville’s favorite holiday tradition,” Mayor Knox White said. “Once again, the City of Greenville and our United Community Bank Ice on Main partners are planning many fun, family-friendly events at the rink. We invite the community to join us for Opening Day and help us welcome back the ice!”

Along with the City of Greenville, there are many community partners that help to make the outdoor ice rink a reality, including title sponsor United Community Bank, who returns for a fourth year. Other returning community sponsor partners include the Greenville Drive, Greenville Health System, Duke Energy Foundation, Macy’s, Fidelity Investments, Greenville Water, the Greenville News, The Peace Center, Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, WYFF4, iHeart Media, Fairway Outdoor, Courtyard Marriott Downtown, Community Foundation, Creative Builders, Triangle Construction and Gimme-A-Sign. This season, the rink welcomes three new sponsors: Re-Wa, Menchie’s and Groucho’s Deli.

“United Community Bank is thrilled to return as the title sponsor of Ice on Main for a fourth year,” Michelle Seaver, President of United Community Bank for Greenville County, said. “Each year, we look forward to the magic that Ice on Main brings to Main Street. We enjoy being a part of community events that make Greenville a better place to live, and there is no better celebration of the winter season than at Ice on Main!”

The founding vision for the outdoor skating rink in the heart of downtown was to create Greenville’s version of New York City’s Rockefeller Center. For the third year, a few sponsors have again joined together to provide a contest that will send one skater and a guest to New York City to enjoy the real Rockefeller Center. The Peace Center, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and United Community Bank will present the third Skate Your Way to Broadway contest. One lucky winner will win airline tickets to New York City, tickets to see Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, a $500 Visa giftcard and passes to skate at Rockefeller Center, as well as tickets to opening night of Disney’s The Lion King at the Peace Center. More details can be found at skateyourwaytobroadway.com.

The Opening Day ceremony will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, with the rink opening to the public at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend the Opening Day ceremony, which will include announcements from event sponsors, live entertainment and the ceremonial first skate.
