United Community Bank Ice on Main concludes fifth anniversary season

January 20, 2016

United Community Bank Ice on Main celebrated the closing of its fifth anniversary season with several exciting announcements about charitable contributions, contest winners and sponsorship news on January 19. Winners of two very special contests were announced and several local charities were awarded funds that had been raised through various events during the season.

Despite record-setting temperatures and rainfall, the fifth year of United Community Bank Ice on Main still drew thousands of skaters and spectators throughout the 9-week season. At the close of this season, more than 70,000 skaters have enjoyed United Community Bank Ice on Main over the past five years.

“United Community Bank Ice on Main wouldn’t be possible without the support of our generous sponsors who dedicate their time and resources to making this a very memorable event. This year, the event attracted more sponsors than ever before, which attests to our community’s proactive approach in gaining national recognition for Greenville as a great place to live and work,” said Mayor Knox White.

At the ceremony, United Community Bank announced their return as title sponsor of the event for three more years.  “This has been such a perfect fit for us at United Community Bank over the past three years,” said Michelle Seaver, President of Greenville County United Community Bank. “We are proud to be able to give back to the community and look forward to continue providing a way for families from all over to create warm, winter memories together here in downtown Greenville.”

After its successful launch last year, commemorative gloves and socks were sold at the rink, and expanded this year to include scarves and handwarmers. Proceeds from the sales of all gloves and socks were donated to Camp Courage, a local nonprofit, courtesy of United Community Bank. Today, Seaver presented a check for $1,040 to Camp Courage. Proceeds from sales of the scarves totaled $170 and were pledged to the Piedmont Natural Gas Share the Warmth Program and proceeds from the handwarmer sales, totaling $194, were given to Make-A-Wish of South Carolina, courtesy of Cabela’s Greenville.

The second annual winner of the season-long “Skate Your Way to Broadway” sweepstakes was also announced at today’s ceremony. The grand prize winner, Rebekah Blake, will receive roundtrip airfare from Greenville Spartanburg International Airport to New York City, the opportunity to skate at Rockefeller Center, tickets to see Matilda at The Peace Center on opening night in Greenville and also on Broadway, and a $500 prepaid American Express card courtesy of United Community Bank.

This season was filled with a wide range of other engaging activities.  In celebration of its first year as a sponsor, the Greenville Drive held a contest for skaters to enter for the chance to win the use of a suite during the Frozen Fluor event in June 2016. During the ceremony, the Drive selected a winner. United Community Bank Ice on Main also continued to partner with GHS to provide free sled hockey clinics throughout the season for those with a disability, and offer skate sled rentals at no additional cost.

The outdoor rink would not be possible without the support of our fiscal sponsors, which include United Community Bank, Greenville Health System, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, Clemson Athletics, the Greenville Drive, Ingles Markets, Duke Energy Foundation, Piedmont Natural Gas, the GEICO local office, Fidelity Investments, Cabela’s and Macy’s. The City of Greenville partners with the Courtyard Marriott Greenville Downtown and Windsor Aughtry to provide the physical space. Other sponsors included our videographer 9/8 Central, and our media partners WYFF 4, The Greenville News, iHeartMedia, My 102.5, and Fairway Outdoor Advertising. A special thanks to our community partners including the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Creative Builders, Triangle Construction, the Community Foundation of Greenville, Gimme-A-Sign Co. and Pepsi for their generosity and support.
