Volunteers needed for playground build day

October 21, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – On Wednesday, November 4, community volunteers and CarMax employees will work together to build an entire playground in one day. More than 75 volunteers from the Greenville community are needed in order to complete the work, which will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and include assembling playground pieces, mixing concrete, moving mulch, etc. Volunteers should be age 18+ and wear comfortable clothes and closed toe shoes. Gloves, goggles and t-shirts will be provided, as well as water, breakfast and lunch. Activities will be available on-site for youth not old enough to assist with the playground construction. The CarMax Foundation and KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, awarded the City of Greenville and the Community Foundation of Greenville a Build it with KaBOOM! Playground Grant for the new playground, which will be located at the David Hellams Community Center (111 Spartanburg Street) in the Greenline-Spartanburg neighborhood. The grant included technical support, based on the KaBOOM! community-build model, through an experienced project manager. The grant also included funding for the playground equipment and site enhancements to transform the area around the playground into an inviting space for the whole community. The project kicked off with Design Day on September 10, when neighborhood children and adults gathered to provide input on what the play space should entail. Since then, a design incorporating residents’ ideas has been finalized, the equipment has been ordered and the site is now being readied for Build Day.
