Reedy River Bank Stabilization Project Scheduled Begins March 21

March 21, 2011

Project designed to address erosion along river bank behind Peace Center

GREENVILLE SC – March 18, 2011 – On Monday, March 21, the City began work to stabilize approximately 450 feet of river bank behind the Peace Center and RiverPlace. The purpose of the project is to preserve and enhance the Reedy River by minimizing erosion and undercutting of the river bank. Weather permitting, the work is expected to be completed within eight weeks.

As a part of the stabilization project, crews will place rocks along the bank to prevent erosion, and in order to place the rocks, the water level must be lowered enough to allow a track hoe access into the river. As a result, the sluice gate at the dam will be opened after a metal containment structure, constructed by Public Works crews for this purpose, is lowered into place to hold back sediment.

Floating turbidity barriers will also be used to contain sediment around the work zone and to prevent it from flowing down river. The water level will be returned to normal depth during the weekends to minimize impacts to the downtown area.
The City has obtained written approval from the Army Corps of Engineers and City staff has notified DHEC, Upstate Forever and Friends of the Reedy River of the details of the project.
