The COMET to display Proterra all-electric bus in Columbia

June 8, 2018

The COMET will showcase a Proterra all-electric transit bus on June 8th after a press conference at the Butch Spires Administrative Building.  The bus will operate on Route 12: Edgewood immediately after the press conference.  There will be free rides on Route 12: Edgewood when this bus is on that route.

Additionally, the bus will be in service on the Soda Cap Connector Friday evening from 5:00pm – 9:00pm and then will then go on display Saturday, June 9th at the Soda City Market from 9:00am – 11:00am.

Proterra vehicles are zero-emission, battery-electric buses manufactured in the South Carolina Upstate that reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels to help clear our air.  Battery-electric buses can also help reduce operating costs.

The COMET is committed to providing clean energy mobility options to the Midlands.  Nearly 60% of The COMET’s current fleet comprises propane-powered cut-a-way buses.  The COMET is partnering with Proterra to pursue a Low- or No-Emissions Federal grant to replace up to seven propane vehicles with electric vehicles. Electric buses would be a milestone for The COMET and the Midlands in the effort to achieve Mayor Steve Benjamin’s resolution to establish a community-wide goal of transitioning to 100% Clean and renewable energy by 2036.  Community Leaders, stakeholders, and riders are all invited to attend.

For those who take public transit, Route 6: Eau Claire and DART comes to the Butch Spires Administrative Building.
