Richland One Middle College enrolling students for 2018-2019

April 16, 2018

Richland One Middle College (ROMC) is not your typical high school. Classes usually don’t start until 9:30 a.m. or later, it’s located on a college campus and, in 2017, it boasted a 100% graduation rate. This award-winning school on the Beltline campus of Midlands Technical College offers high school juniors and seniors small classes, free college courses and textbooks, flexible school hours and exceptional academic opportunities that can prepare them for college or the workforce.

ROMC is opening enrollment to interested applicants for the 2018-2019 school year. Online applications are available at www.richlandonemiddlecollege.com. Parents and students interested in learning more about ROMC also are invited to attend an information night on May 1 from 6- 8 p.m. in room 110 of the Lindau Engineering Technology Building at Midlands Tech, 316 South Beltline Boulevard.

ROMC was a perfect fit for seniors Ashley Ramirez, Shahnaaz Sorrells, Hector Alcantara and Alexander Ishmal.

Ashley, who will graduate this spring with a high school diploma and two associate degrees, says enrolling at ROMC was the hardest decision but also the best decision she could have ever made.

“Though I missed my old friends and teachers, I was encouraged at ROMC to focus more on my future and where I wanted to be. Whether it was writing my recommendation letter that led to me earning thousands in scholarships, helping me understand my college calculus class, or even driving me home from events, all of the staff have touched my heart.”

Shahnaaz, who was homeschooled prior to enrolling at ROMC, says the school’s flexible schedule has allowed her to keep a job while going to high school, but she also enjoys its traditional high school activities.

“It’s also like a regular school. We have prom, field trips and senior trips. It’s just as much fun as you would like, with a smaller student body.”

Hector, ROMC student body president and a member of the National Honor Society, says ROMC has him well-prepared for college.

“I think everyone should take advantage of the opportunity to get college credit in high school. ROMC is different. I have a flexible schedule and some of my classes don’t start until the afternoon – good training for college.”

Alexander, who is active in student government and plays basketball for Lower Richland High School, appreciates the school’s requirement that students perform 90 hours of public service per year. “I’ve become a lot sharper and my mind is open to a lot more since being at ROMC. ROMC gets you out of your comfort zone. I like the community service experiences. It feels good to give back to the people you live with or you see every day.”
