West Columbia American Legion volunteers raising money for lodge repairs

January 29, 2018

Volunteers are raising money to fund repairs and maintenance to the American Legion Post 79 lodge in West Columbia.

The aging building has developed some maintenance issues that need attention, said Post 79 member Billy Oswald, who is spearheading the fundraiser. He said the organization is seeking donations from individuals and businesses to pay for upgrades such as roof repairs, new interior paint and new appliances.

As a venue for local events as well as a meeting place for the local American Legion post, the lodge on B Avenue helps “draw the community closer together,” Oswald said.

But more importantly, it’s a gesture of the community’s gratitude toward its veterans, said Oswald, an Army veteran.

“It’s a tangible expression of thanks to those who served and sacrificed,” he said. “That’s why its maintenance is so important. Through proper upkeep, we can show we’re serious about supporting our veterans and keep the lodge a valuable community asset to be proud of.”

Oswald said Post 79 hopes to raise a minimum of $7,500. Any person or business that makes a contribution, regardless of size, will be publicly recognized.

Anyone wishing to contribute can send a check of any amount to: American Legion Post 79, 1031 Center St., West Columbia SC 29169. For more information, call 796-7260.
