Columbia Parks & Recreation implements new staff development program

January 25, 2018

The Columbia Parks and Recreation Department has implemented a new staff development program as it kicks off the new calendar year. The Parks Recreation staff is excited about Summer 2018 programming and is planning ahead.

With the new training program, all staff will participate in a series of professional development opportunities. The goal is to help enhance the quality of service provided to citizens and strengthen the skills that each employee possesses.

Training topics will include safety and maintenance, program administration, stress management, curriculum development, and more.

The Parks & Recreation Department partnered with the South Carolina Center for Childcare Career Development to provide 20 hours of Department of Social Services Childcare training in January. The training focused on child growth and development, program administration, child guidance, safety and special needs.

Additional training planned in 2018 includes:

  • All staff will participate in CPR-First Aide training in February through the American Red Cross.
  • Recreation staff will be trained in March on the summer camp training manual.
  • Pesticide, CDL and OSHA training will be scheduled for staff in the Parks Division.
