Honors College to induct inaugural class of Clyburn Scholars

Four SC State freshmen and members of the university’s Honors College, will be formally inducted as the first recipients of the Emily England Clyburn Honors College Scholarship during a special breakfast and induction ceremony on Friday, Oct. 27, at 8:30 a.m.
The students are recipients of $10,000 scholarships, which were named in honor of Emily Clyburn, the wife of U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina. Both are alumni of SC State’s class of 1961.

The Clyburn scholarship, which may be applied to tuition and fees, was established in the fall of 2015 as a result of philanthropic donations made to the Honors College by the Clyburn family.
During the induction ceremony, the recipients will be officially introduced as the inaugural fall 2017 class. The recipients are Charles Patton, a physics major from Atlanta, Georgia; Kortni Roberts, an agribusiness major from Flint, Michigan; Gregory Watkins-Pinckney, a mechanical engineering major from Spartanburg, South Carolina andMaya Young, a speech pathology major from Greenville, South Carolina.
Congressman and Emily Clyburn, as well as members of their family and congressional staff, are expected to be in attendance. They are eager to extend a helping hand to the diligent students of SC State University.
Dr. Jennifer Clyburn-Reed, daughter of Congressman and Emily Clyburn, stated, “On behalf of the Clyburn family, I commend these students, as they have accepted the challenge of pursuing academic excellence at the SC State Honors College.”
“This pursuit mirrors the actions of my mother, who faced the challenges of an era plagued by inequity and injustice, during her time as a student. She [Emily] chose to conquer those challenges by obtaining a solid education, and using that education to help others prosper,” Clyburn-Reed continued.
Dr. Harriet Roland, dean of the Honors College, expressed gratitude for this gift of scholarship, which will greatly help students succeed academically.
“The Honors College is forever grateful to the Clyburn family for choosing to invest in the lives of some of our best and brightest students here at SC State. These financial gifts are noble and extremely helpful to us. We accept these gifts with humility,” said Roland.
“This scholarship will pay rich dividends towards the recruitment, retention and graduation of the outstanding students at our great institution,” she continued.
The general eligibility requirements for the Clyburn scholarship are as follows:
- Must be an incoming freshman enrolled in 12 or more course credit hours
- Must be a legal resident of South Carolina
- Must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative high school GPA
- Must be a member of the SC State Honors College, and in good academic standing.
