The naked truth
July 12, 2017By Brian Maynor
Are you comfortable being naked?
Surprisingly not a lot of people can say ‘yes’ to that question. When we’re naked we feel extra vulnerable, literally and figuratively exposed and carry our body issues and self-consciousness to the extreme.
As much as we use, enjoy and need clothing to function and thrive in society, there are undeniable benefits and truths to being naked. While we may not be able to disrobe in the middle of the office, there is one time when we all can embrace being naked, and that’s while we sleep.
Here are some of the top benefits we gain by sleeping naked:
1. It makes getting ready for bed a lot easier. Think about it. We save time and money by not having to hunt for the perfect pair of pajamas that don’t bunch, bind or chafe, which usually aren’t cheap, and there are fewer clothes for us to wash and put away. The tradeoff is washing our sheets a little more often.
2. It forces us to stay active longer. Are you one of the masses who leave work longing to lounge on the sofa in your pajamas? Instead of stripping off our work clothes as we’re walking in the door, sleeping naked means we don’t have any pajamas to change into. By staying in our work clothes, or a slightly relaxed iteration of them, we are less likely to spend the evening vegging in front of the TV and more likely to go back out and do something.
3. It healthier for us. Being enveloped by only two cool sheets keeps our body temperature more evenly regulated, which actually helps control cortisol. If we are overheated at night our bodies produce increased levels of cortisol that remain high even after we wake up. This leads to anxiety, cravings for junk food, and weight gain among other things.
4. It’s better for our skin. Think about all those parts of our bodies that are covered, often by multiple layers, all day long. By sleeping naked we give these areas space, and allow them to breathe for eight hours. That does wonders for preventing or repairing skin disorders or diseases that can result from wet, restricted skin.
5. It keeps us younger. Most of us sleep better when we’re cooler, and it’s proven that keeping our environments less than 70 degrees helps our bodies maintain healthy levels of melatonin and growth hormones. That’s important not only for good health, but also because it prevents aging.
We all benefit from a good night sleep, whether we are wearing pajamas or not, but sleeping naked has all of these additional benefits. Another benefit that I feel is probably the most important, is that it we become comfortable in our own skin. Seeing it, touching it and sleeping in it night after night breaks down insecurities, misconceptions and ideas that we need to cover up and hide for whatever reason. Whether we share a bed with a loving partner or sleep alone, sleeping naked is good for our bodies and our minds.
