Korean War Veterans to be honored at Memorial Ceremony

Richland County Councilmembers will join other officials in a ceremony this week to honor South Carolinians who died in the Korean War.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24 at the Korean War Memorial Monument near the main entrance of Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 6439 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia. The public is invited to attend.
“This will be a special event to commemorate those who gave their lives while serving in Korea,” said Richland County Councilman Jim Manning, who will be in attendance. “It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and make sure our veterans are never forgotten.”
Richland County Council shined a spotlight on local Korean War-era veterans in 2013 during a program at the Township Auditorium to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the conflict often referred to as the “Forgotten War.”
The ceremony at Dorn is organized by a local nonprofit organization, the International Senior College of South Carolina. The Korean War Monument located at the veterans hospital is made out of stone from the Nakdong River in South Korea, where some of the deadliest fighting in the war took place.
