Highway construction training program offered in five SC counties

March 20, 2017

Thirty residents of five (5) South Carolina Counties may be eligible to receive pre-employment training, heavy equipment operator training and commercial drivers’ license training in the field of highway construction.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has recently awarded a Transportation Careers Training Program (TCTP) grant to S2 Engineering and Consulting.

The grant will be used to train unemployed, underemployed, minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals for transportation related jobs in the highway construction industry.

The one-year grant provides pre-employment training, heavy equipment operator training and commercial drivers’ license training for 30 individuals.  Individuals must reside in Allendale, Bamberg, Marlboro, Marion and Orangeburg counties.

The TCTP is sponsored by the SCDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (South Carolina Division Office).  This program will provide opportunities for individuals to obtain a commercial drivers’ license, certification as a heavy equipment operator and National Center for Construction Education and Research certification.

A key challenge employers face today is finding candidates who have the skills needed to become employed in the highway construction industry. The TCTP will provide opportunities for individuals to gain a construction-related skill, which will increase the opportunity for them to have a career in the highway construction industry.
