Palmetto Health statement on Sisters of Charity lawsuit

February 27, 2017

In August 2016, the Sisters of Charity of Cleveland, Ohio, the former owners of Providence Hospitals, filed a lawsuit against Palmetto Health related to the orthopedic physicians and their practice choosing to join Palmetto Health in 2015. At that time, Palmetto Health began vigorously defending the integrity of our organization and our people.

On Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, the Honorable Joseph F. Anderson, Jr., United States District Judge, dismissed the lawsuit. All Federal antitrust counts brought against Palmetto Health were dismissed in their entirety.

Palmetto Health CEO Charles D. Beaman, Jr., said, “We are very pleased with Judge Anderson’s decision. We have been committed from the beginning to the partnership with our orthopedic physicians. Together, we will ensure community members have access to even more complete and comprehensive orthopedic care. We are grateful for our 15,000 team members’ commitment to providing our patients with the full range of health care services across the Palmetto Health system and bringing our Vision to life: To be remembered by each patient as providing the care and compassion we want for our families and ourselves.”
