Why You Should Hold Off On Making Your Resolutions Until February

You can’t count down the ball dropping at midnight without thinking about some new year resolutions, but some people are bucking the system and reserving the resolutions until February.

Could this be the solution to actually keeping your resolutions this year?  Since only about 8% of us in any way achieve New Year’s resolutions it’s not surprising that if we make any at all, we do so off-hand with an ‘it would be nice if it happened’ attitude instead of a real focused commitment to creating change.

This year why not try something new and see if you have more success.  What do you have to lose?

Here is some great rationale on why it makes sense to postpone any resolutions until February in case you need convincing:

You’re exhausted.  Think about it.  We’ve just come off of two months of excess.  Between the shopping, the parties, the food, the travelling and the rush to tie up loose ends, this is the first time we’ve had to actually stop, rest and breathe.

It doesn’t make sense.  The last thing you want to do when you’re tired is tackle something new.  Whether that is starting new habits or discarding old ones, personal development takes time and focus.  Use this month to recharge your batteries because change is a long-distance endeavor, not a sprint.

Planning is the key to success.  It doesn’t take a genius or mentor to tell you that one of the key factors to success is planning.  And chances are you haven’t had a second to really think about let alone develop a plan for accomplishing your 2017 resolutions.  While the goals themselves are important, the plan on how to achieve them will dictate success.

Do what works for you.  Resolutions are extremely personal; so don’t get caught up on the ‘norm’ of starting them in January.   You should not be intimidated to define, start or tweak them on a schedule that works for you.  If it makes you feel better, one of your resolutions can be to use the month of January for planning out your other resolutions.  Two birds, one stone.

I can’t think of a better time to just sit back and reflect on the past year than January.  It’s not the best time to necessarily take action.  Save that for February when you are recharged and can really focus.
