Entrepreneur Secrets: Where to find your biggest profit

January 3, 2017

By Jerry Bellune

I was reading an “expert” on marketing recently.

His advice: Forget whatever happened in 2016.

Start 2017 fresh, with a clean slate, he proclaimed.

There are lots of experts who spout such nonsense.

Do you wonder if they ever actually ran a business?

Or is this just what they learned in business school.

This expert (I won’t mention names) commanded:

Start from scratch and ask yourself:

What must we accomplish in marketing in 2017?

That is really the key question, he said.

I don’t disagree. But I do disagree with his premise.

All of your years in business have been an education.

To ignore what you learned is foolish.

Small business owners have limited resources.

We need to place our bets on the best sources of sales.

Mr. Expert said we should focus on new business.

New business is vital. But it is the most expensive.

It takes more time and money to attract.

We must define who those new customers are.

Define what it is they want and need.

What they can afford or are willing to pay for it.

How we can let them know we have what they want.

I’ll suggest two better targets for you:

  1. Happy customers who will buy more from you.

You already know who they are and what they like.

Offer them new products and services they will want.

  1. Dormant clients who used to do business with you.

Contact them. Let them know you care about them.

Ask what they need and want from you now.

Are these desires that you can fill?

If not, just a little time was invested. Call another.

Go through the same questions.

Some will buy. Some won’t. OK, who’s next?

This isn’t magic, brain surgery or rocket science.

It’s common sense. Go after the ones you know.

When that’s done, go after new business.
