How To Make Boredom Productive
July 6, 2016By Brian Maynor
No matter how exciting your job is, finding yourself bored at work is an inevitable. The question is do you know what to do when you are bored and how to make it productive?
When we get bored at work it is easy to lose focus, drive, commitment and even happiness, so having proper coping techniques are essential. Not only to keep you satisfied, but also to keep your boss off your back for wasting company time.
Here are a few simple suggestions:
1. Pursue a Promotion. One of the most common causes of boredom is lack of a challenge, and actually a pretty good indication you’re ready for more responsibilities, if not the next step in your career. Some activities you can do to engage this goal are updating your online professional profiles, hiring a coach, or actually start job searching.
2. Expand your Skill Set. Along with boredom generally comes more free time, so make sure it’s productive. A few options are taking a professional development class or volunteering for other projects or in other departments in your office. Learning new skills will only help strengthen your resume and put you in a better position when pursuing your next career step.
3. Network. Engaging with people in meetings is very limiting and only a fraction of the potential that person could bring to the table. If you find yourself looking for something to do around the office, try networking with your coworkers, peers, bosses and even industry colleagues. Invite them to coffee to get out of the office and just have a conversation.
4. Become a Mentor. One way to stay motivated through the mundane is to give back. Chances are if you’re bored with your job then you’ve mastered it, which means it is time to look for ways of passing on that information and expertise to others. Whether it is through a company program, community program or even just volunteering, you never know what you have to offer until you start giving back.
Boredom is natural and to some degree unavoidable, especially at work, but if you know how to frame it and use it, boredom can be quite productive. It’s all about putting boredom into action.
