Hobby Lobby Lawyer to Speak at CIU
October 1, 2014Oct. 31 at 12:30 p.m. in the Moore Fitness Center on the CIU campus
This past spring, Columbia International University alumnus Daniel Blomberg found himself in the middle of one of the most important and closely watched Supreme Court cases in the history of the United States: Hobby Lobby v. Burwell, better known as the Hobby Lobby case.
Blomberg graduated from CIU in 2003 with a degree in Psychology, and in 2008 from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He will discuss his experiences with the Hobby Lobby case during CIU’s 2014 Homecoming celebration. Blomberg will be the keynote speaker at the President’s Lunch Oct. 31 at 12:30 p.m. in the Moore Fitness Center on the CIU campus. The public is invited to attend, but registration is required by Oct. 23.
Blomberg served on the Hobby Lobby case as legal counsel with The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C. that represented Hobby Lobby. The Becket Fund is a non-profit, public-interest legal and educational institute with a mission to protect the free expression of all faiths.
The Hobby Lobby case centered on a Christian family that owns Hobby Lobby, a nationwide chain of craft stores, who wanted to protect their religious pro-life convictions and not be forced to offer four specific contraceptives that cause abortions, as mandated by federal law in the Affordable Care Act.
Blomberg was also a part of the litigation team on two related cases, Little Sisters of the Poor v. Sebelius and Wheaton College v. Burwell that also went to the Supreme Court. Blomberg says the Hobby Lobby rulingwas crucial forcivil liberty.
“The first freedom protected in the Bill of Rights is religious liberty, in part because it is the foundation for all of the following civil liberties,” Blomberg said. “Recognizing that citizens are subject to a Higher Authority than government officials keeps government in check and helps secure freedom for everyone.”
