Mizzell Filed Today to Enter Race for Columbia City Council District Four Seat

COLUMBIA, SC – February 5, 2010 – Tony Mizzell, former Richland County Chairman and Vice President of Interactive Marketing at Chernoff Newman, filed today as a candidate for the Columbia City Council race to represent the fourth district  in the April 6th election.

Mizzell said his election will “offer experienced leadership to assist the city in better managing its finances and restoring public confidence.  Mizzell served on Richland County Council from 1998-2006 and served as Chairman of County Council in 2005 and 2006.  During that time, he led the effort to pass the Local Option Sales Tax, which has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in property tax relief to residents and small businesses in the City of Columbia and Richland County.  And under his leadership, Richland County received the distinguished All American Community Award.

If elected, Mizzell said he will focus on efficiently managing the city’s resources; reducing crime rates and strengthening neighborhood safety; developing economic growth and job creation opportunities; and fostering intergovernmental cooperation.

“I want to bring a new perspective to City Council, eliminating inefficiencies and strengthening cooperation among local government to better serve our Columbia and Midlands area residents,” said Mizzell.  “I’m looking forward to running a positive campaign over the next several months and meeting with neighbors to learn what issues are most important to them,” he added.

Mizzell and his wife, Hope, who is the State Climatologist, reside in the Brandon Hills neighborhood in Southeast Columbia with their two children, Sybil (9) and T.J. (6).
