Anesthesiology Consultants of SC doctor wins prestigious teaching award

LANCASTER, SC – July 8, 2008 – Dennis Jacobs, DO, MMSc, has been awarded the Donald H. Harwood Award for Outstanding Clinical Instructor in the University of South Carolina’s PRMH Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia. Dr. Jacobs is the Chief of Anesthesiology at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, S.C.

Named in honor of Donald H. Harwood, MD, who established the USC School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1969, the award is presented annually by the graduating class.

 I have been training students off and on for 20 years. After residency, I was exposed to teaching student nurse anesthetists while working for the military at Womak Army Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. I always felt a sense of price and responsibility in teaching the Army student anesthetists because I wanted to make them the best anesthetist possible so that when they care for our men and women in uniform in some austere location, that soldier then has the best chance possible of reaching definitive care and ultimately surviving their trauma.

What I hope this award shows is that Š what matters is that you have the very best training available while a student, and I believe we give them that here at Springs Memorial Hospital, Jacobs said. I also stress to my students the importance of working alongside the anesthesiologists making up the Anesthesia Care Team to ensure the patient’s needs are met and the quality delivery of anesthetic.

Jacobs earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and a Masters of Medicine Science from Emory University. His received a Doctor of Osteopathy from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship at Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and his residency in anesthesiology at MetroHealth Medical Center – Case Western University Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
