“Experts are predicting the worst flu season in history,” according to CNBC, and it’s easy to see why when 46 states report widespread breakouts.

That being said, if you haven’t been sick yet this year, you’re lucky.  With all of the cold and flu bugs going around and the people we have to interact with every day; it feels like getting sick is inevitable.

And if getting sick wasn’t bad enough, there is the recovery time it takes afterwards to get back to normal.  Illnesses leave us drained, exhausted and running on empty, but there are a few things we can do to rebound faster.

Here are three ways we can speed up our recovery that works after any illness or injury:

1.   What we eat and drink.  When we’re sick we usually don’t feel like eating at all, and afterwards we may want to indulge in comfort foods.  Unfortunately most comfort food is not rich in vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to not only repair damage caused by the illness, but also restore our energy.  Staying hydrated is also another concern.  Water is the most recommended fluid, but you can include other options for an added boost of vitamins and minerals.

2.    Exercise.  It may seem counter intuitive that exerting yourself could make you feel more energize, but that is exactly what happens.  Exercising after being sick may not be the most intense workouts, but a little exercise goes a long way.  Getting started is always the hardest part, but by gradually getting back into your routine you will feel better, create more energy and do your body good.

3.    Lean on others.  Getting back to work after an illness undoubtedly means digging out of a mound of work.  It may be tempting to dive-in and try to do it all yourself, but that may just exacerbate the problem.  Recovering from an illness is just as hard as being sick, so it’s okay to ask for help.  No one expects you to be back to 100% immediately, and we shouldn’t expect it from ourselves either.

4.    Rest.  Getting enough sleep and rest is always important, but it’s more so when we’re recovering.  Physicians suggest not staying up past prime time to rebuild our energy levels, because going to sleep earlier is much more effective than sleeping in.  Other forms of rest include taking a long, hot bath, relaxing on the sofa and reading a book.

Recovering from an illness or injury takes time, but luckily we can shorten the amount of time it takes to regain our energy levels and get back to conquering the world.
