The 4 types of leaders
January 2, 2018By Brian Maynor
As we kick off another new year, there is no better time to take the reins and step into a leadership role, whether that’s at work or in our personal lives.
That can be easier said than done, if our vision of a leader is someone far removed from who we are at heart. Luckily for us, leaders come in various shapes and sizes.
Bill Taylor, cofounder of Fast Company, researched leaders and found that they could be sorted into four basic types.
Here’s a simplified breakdown to help us find see which category we fall into:
1. The Learning Zealot. These leaders not only like to share the wisdom and knowledge they have acquired over the years, but they also continue to learn. They are voracious learners. One of their favorite questions to ask is, “When was the last time we did something first?” Bill found these leaders to be focused and determined on learning at the same rate the world is changing.
2. The Reinventor. Time and experience often lead to success, but it can also create routines and patterns of behavior. The very things that created past success can limit the possibilities for future ones. Reinventors are leaders who are not afraid of shaking things up, even to the core, in the attempt to break free from limiting or out-of-date ideas in pursuit of future success.
3. The Tough-Minded Optimist. Being a leader has just as much to do with emotion as it does intellect, because their attitude and outlook set the tone for everyone to follow. Tough-Minded Optimists are not only highly motivated people, driven by their intense desire to create an outcome, they have the ability to make others believe in it as well.
4. The Eager Experimenter. Whenever a new project, endeavor or idea is started, its success is never guaranteed. In fact, most ideas fail or fizzle out without ever coming to fruition. That prospect doesn’t deter the Eager Experimenter from investing and supporting them. These leaders know that the big breakthroughs are often built on the backs of projects that bombed and are willing to embrace the setbacks and pitfalls that often come before progress and success.
The future is wide open, but to create the one we want we have to be willing to become a leader. We all have the ability to become a leader, with habits and tendencies towards one style of leadership over another. The question is whether or not we’re willing to embrace them or not.
