Prentice Brower, Executive Director, Lowcountry Maritime Society

The mission of the Lowcountry Maritime Society is to inspire the Lowcountry’s young people to reach their full potential through boatbuilding and exploring maritime culture.

Prentice was raised on the waters of the Lowcountry teaching sailing in the summers and racing throughout the year. He graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Political Science. Shortly after graduation, Prentice began an apprentice with a local wooden boatbuilder. In 2014, he launched Lowcountry Maritime Society, a program that teaches STEAM skills through a two-semester, after-school program to build boats. The program was started at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School and was an immediate success.

A cool part of their business model is that they have developed revenue sources that are separate from the typical non profit – grants and fundraising. Profits from their fully functioning boat yard help fund the operations of the non profit Lowcountry Maritime Society.
