August 4, 2017

HARTSVILLE, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce Jon Shannon, GSSM’s chief information officer, has been named executive vice president.

In his new EVP role, Shannon will serve enhanced functions and engage in day-to-day strategic planning alongside GSSM President Dr. Hector Flores.

“Jon has my trust and that of his fellow leadership team members, earned through his passion, hard work and loyalty to this very special school. I am confident he will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and leadership in his new role,” said Dr. Flores.

Shannon has served as the School’s chief information officer since 2005 and he is currently spearheading GSSM’s year-long strategic planning initiative.

Prior to GSSM, Shannon was the director of information technology at Northfield Mount Hermon School, a selective boarding school in Massachusetts.

Shannon holds a B.S. in Political Science from Coker College and M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His early career included teaching computer science in higher education institutions and developing software for corporate environments.

After many years in information technology and business development, he returned to higher education at Coker College. While there, he collaborated with staff at GSSM and admired the close relationship between students, faculty and administration.

When the opportunity arose, Shannon moved his family to Hartsville to join the administration and build a technology base that supports all facets of the School’s work and extends across the state to deliver the Accelerate Virtual Engineering Program.

Shannon has been recognized by the National Association of Independent Schools and presented at major conferences across the country on topics such as technical administration and strategic planning.
