Governor’s School hosts Inaugural open house event for local elementary and middle school students

February 20, 2017

The Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) will premiere its first interactive Inside GSSM day on Saturday, February 25, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the School’s residential campus, 401 Railroad Avenue, Hartsville, South Carolina, 29550. Families and students will have a chance to interact with GSSM students, faculty and staff while exploring all the School has to offer.

Geared toward elementary and middle schoolers, Inside GSSM will give students a chance to dive into more than 30 interactive experiences developed by GSSM instructors, students, and staff. Those attending will also be treated to musical performances and robotics demonstrations, as well as a vertebrate animal show and interactive exhibits showcasing residential life and the GSSM learning experience.

Inside GSSM has been created to showcase the wide range of experiences included within the GSSM learning community, while also inspiring younger students and their families with hands-on, interactive, educational activities.

“We are a selective school that nurtures, encourages and expects excellence. We are also part of a community, starting with our home city of Hartsville, our home county of Darlington and the entire state we serve,” said Dr. Hector Flores, president of GSSM. “The hope is that this open house will be the start of a tradition that will enable children from around the state to get a taste of GSSM and imagine being a part of our summer, residential and virtual programs.”

“So many awesome educational experiences and learning opportunities permeate the halls, classrooms and meeting spaces at GSSM every day. We want to share this with others. Inside GSSM is an opportunity for young students and their families to engage with our community,” said Randy La Cross, vice president for outreach & research at GSSM. “I guarantee Inside GSSM will deliver a day of imagination, inspiration, and innovation to everyone who attends.”

Families will experience GSSM as they participate in activities like Polyominoes, 3-D printing, Makey Makey, the Colorful World of Plants, Poetry, Video Production and more.
