Challenge Is Often The Catalyst To Improvement
August 12, 2016By Brian Maynor
Over the past week, a lot of the articles I’ve read shared a single theme; challenging yourself and others consistently leads to improvement.
This has been proven the case across numerous studies and in various formats. Whether it comes in the form of performance reviews, team goals or simply personal growth, when people are challenged to do more, be better, or break out of their comfort zone they will rise to meet that challenge and in doing so perform better, obtain or surpass goals and experience personal development.
Now that we have the evidence pushing ourselves is beneficial what is the best way to do it? If you need help, here is an effective 3-step process:
1. Be mindful and honest. We are presented with countless challenges everyday, but a lot of people are so use to saying ‘no thank you’ or making excuses that they become blind to them. Instead of relying on your default program for turning down invitations or challenges that make you uncomfortable, the next time you receive one don’t answer right away. You’ll be tempted to decline for one reason or another, but taking the time to think about it will give you the opportunity to honestly assess your rationale to see if it’s true, or just an excuse.
2. Challenges offer flexibility. With most challenges you are presented with a desired outcome, but the way to achieve it is left open to interpretation. This is a huge plus because it allows you to complete autonomy on how you reach the end result. Not everyone does well with massive change, but given the first step outside your comfort zone is a huge one, it’s okay to work in increments. You’re still challenging yourself and pushing yourself to grow.
3. Take accountable action. Stepping outside our norm is scary, and you will without a doubt put roadblocks in your own way. The best way to over come them is to make action unavoidable, and accountable. Setting deadlines and working with a partner or small group are the most common and successful forms of taking accountable action because it makes us responsible to someone other than ourselves.
Growth is never smooth, easy or instantaneous. It is a process, and actually setbacks, mistakes and a return to your comfort zone are all part of the process. As long as you keep accepting challenges and taking new action you are growing and improving both personally and professionally.
