Berkeley County School District Celebrates Veterans Day

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Schools are making sure their students know to thank a veteran for the freedoms they enjoy on Veterans Day.  Even though it is a school day, schools throughout the district will provide patriotic displays.

Hanahan Middle School will have a Veterans Day dinner on Thursday, November 6 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for local veterans in their multipurpose room.  The student leaders are looking forward to showing local veterans their gratitude and celebrating their service and sacrifice.

Berkeley Elementary School will have a Veterans Day assembly in their auditorium at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday and Sangaree Elementary School will have breakfast with local veterans at 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria.  The students will present a patriotic program after breakfast.  The school expects approximately 100 attendees.  Timberland and Cane Bay High Schools will have a patriotic assembly to teach students about the history and importance of Veterans Day on Tuesday.

Veterans Day is an especially important holiday to Marrington Elementary School.  More than 85 percent of their parents are active duty service members.  The school will serve veterans a free lunch on Tuesday.   Sangaree Middle School will host a Veterans Day Luncheon for sixteen vets who plan to attend on Tuesday.

Howe Hall AIMS will celebrate, honor and remember the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and active service members at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11 in the Multi-Purpose Room.  Those who plan to attend can contact Heather Corbin at 843-820-3899.

Connie Myers, the Berkeley County School District Capital Projects Director, and her sister plan to donate copies of the biography of Myers’ brother-in-law Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene called Harry the Dirty Dog to every elementary school in Berkeley School District.  Maj. Gen. Greene made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan and his family is joining with our youngest students to celebrate his life.
