Santee Cooper Regional Water System Sets Delivery Record

MONCKS CORNER, SC – May 25, 2011 – The Santee Cooper Regional Water System delivered a record amount of water earlier this week, breaking a nearly four-year-old record.
The new record, set May 23, is 25.9 million gallons in a 24-hour period. The previous record was 24.2 million gallons, set on May 30, 2007. System capacity is rated at 36 million gallons per day (mgd).
Last fall, Santee Cooper completed $2.7 million in upgrades at its Lake Moultrie treatment plant near Moncks Corner and a 1-million gallon storage tank near Goose Creek.
“This record peak was driven by the hot weather, recent lack of rain and people turning on sprinklers and filling up swimming pools,” said R.M. Singletary, Santee Cooper’s executive vice president of corporate services. “Good planning pays off, and our recent upgrades really helped us meet the new peak and the ongoing needs of the four water utilities we supply.”
Singletary credited Water System Manager Darla Barnette for supervising the system upgrade and positioning it for the new growth. In operation since October 1994, the Santee Cooper system draws and treats water from Lake Moultrie and delivers it to the Summerville Commissioners of Public Works, Berkeley County Water & Sanitation Authority, city of Goose Creek, and Moncks Corner Public Works Commission.
