Graham Announces Over $2.5 Million in COPS Grants to South Carolina

WASHINGTON– October 20, 2010 – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina)today announced over $2.5 million in grants from the Community OrientedPolicing Services (COPS) program for Anderson, Beaufort, Berkeley,Charleston, Chester, Dorchester, Greenwood, Jasper, Marion, Pickens,Spartanburg, and Williamsburg counties.

Grants were awarded in the following program areas:

  • COPS Hiring Program (CHP):  The funds may be used to create and/orpreserve law enforcement jobs.  These funds go directly to lawenforcement agencies to hire new and/or rehire career law enforcementofficers in an effort and to increase their community policing capacityand crime prevention efforts.
  • COPS Secure Our Schools (SOS):  The funds may be used to providefunding for school safety resources, as well as establish and enhance avariety of school safety equipment and/or programs to encourage schoolsafety efforts meant to prevent school violence within theircommunities.
  • COPS Child Sexual Predator Prosecution Program (CSPP):   The fundsmay be used to help reduce and prevent child endangerment by protectingcommunities from sexual predators.  The program is also designed tocreate strong partnerships between law enforcement, U.S. Attorney’sOffices and U.S. Marshals, as well as other community partners such asparole and probation offices, social services agencies, and state orlocal prosecutors.

The grant awards include:

Anderson
The City of Anderson will receive a $465,061 COPS Child Sexual Predator Prosecution Program grant.

Beaufort
The Port Royal Police Department will receive a $171,849 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester
Summerville will receive a $378,952 COPS Hiring Program grant.

The City of North Charleston will receive a $345,155 COPS Secure Our Schools grant.

Chester
The Chester County Sheriff’s Department will receive a $307,564 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Greenwood
The City of Greenwood will receive a $228,006 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Jasper
Jasper County will receive a $102,078 COPS Secure Our Schools grant.

Marion
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will receive a $210,134 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Pickens
The Pickens Police Department will receive a $126,802 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Spartanburg
The Town of Duncan will receive a $145,862 COPS Hiring Program grant.

Williamsburg

The Greeleyville Police Department will receive a $112,023 COPS Hiring Program grant.
