“Blackbaud has been engaged with supporting online givingfor nonprofits for more than a decade now,” said Steve MacLaughlin, Blackbaud’sdirector of Internet solutions. “The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving is thenext step in sharing trends and insights into what is happening in thenonprofit sector.”

The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving released today reportsthat online revenue increased by 23 percent for the three months ending May2010 as compared to the same period in 2009. Along with the launch of TheBlackbaud Index of Online Giving today, Blackbaud released additional data andanalysis that reports on organizations by size. The Index found that three-monthonline revenue for small organizations (prior 12 month total revenue of < $1million) increased 13.1 percent in May, while revenue at medium organizations (prior12 month total revenue of $1 – 10 million) increased 21.3 percent, and revenueat large organizations (prior 12 month total revenue of > $10 million)increased 28 percent.

Nick Allen, chief strategy officer of Donordigital, provided guest analysis of the Index in a reportthat accompanied the release. “The 23 percent increase in online fundraising revenuerevealed by the first edition of the new Blackbaud Index of Online Giving, along with additional new data showing that retention of online-acquired donorsis almost as good as for mail-acquired donors, provides some good news in agenerally dismal fundraising time,” said Allen.

According to Allen, the data shows that it is important fornonprofits to invest in building their online fundraising program because itcan grow much faster than their mail/phone program, even in a poor economy. Hecommented that nonprofits’ online programs acquire higher value donors, attractyounger donors, and bring in acquisition gifts that are typically twice as highor more than mail gifts, with a higher lifetime value too.

The Blackbaud Index of CharitableGiving, which was launched last month, was also updated today and reports 6.2percent growth in overall fundraising for the three months ending May 2010 ascompared to the same period in 2009. The Index found that three-month overallrevenue for small organizations (prior 12 month total revenue of < $1million) increased 8.6 percent in May, while revenue at medium organizations (prior12 month total revenue of $1 – 10 million) remained relatively flat with a -.7percent decrease, and revenue at large organizations (prior 12 month totalrevenue > $10 million) increased 8.7 percent.
