Burnette honored at International Women’s Day Luncheon

M. Malissa Burnette, a co-founder of Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, was among 10 trailblazers honored at this year’s International Women’s Day luncheon.
Burnette was recognized for her work in social justice, including two landmark cases that expanded opportunities for women and girls. The first, a case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court, cleared the way for women to attend state-supported military schools. The second allowed girls to play contact sports at South Carolina high schools.
The event, organized by the Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network, also recognized volunteers who have created programs for troubled youths and advocated for children and families. The manager of an activist network and organizer of the South Carolina Women’s March also was honored, as were leaders in business, medicine and politics.
“These trailblazers have embodied WREN’s mission through their personal, professional, and philanthropic achievements,” the organization said.
A South Carolina Supreme Court certified specialist in labor and employment law, Burnette’s legal practice includes representing clients in a range of complex cases. She’s litigated matters including discrimination, civil rights, harassment and more in state and federal courts.
