Burnette Shutt & McDaniel open new law offices in Vista District

June 13, 2017

Three skilled and experienced attorneys have come together to create Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, a new law firm in Columbia’s Vista District that will focus on employment law, environmental law, privacy issues and litigation.

Founders M. Malissa Burnette, Nekki Shutt and Kathleen McDaniel practiced together for nearly seven years before forming the firm. They’re joined by Janet Rhodes and Jacqueline “Jax” Pavlicek.

“The opportunity to build a unique law practice with people who are both colleagues and friends doesn’t arise too often in life,” Burnette said. “It is exciting to work with lawyers who have similar values and goals.”

Nekki Shutt pointed to the attorneys’ common, and at times shared, histories. “Our attorneys have long track records of challenging social injustices in sweeping cases,” Shutt said. “We’ve also fought for micro-level changes, assisting small businesses and helping with neighborhood disputes. The lawyers at our firm bring the same commitment to every case, whether we’re working to change the law for many or to help one person.”

McDaniel noted that the firm’s location at historic 912 Lady St. is appropriate considering the attorneys’ track records of ground-breaking litigation. “Our offices blend the best of the modern era with a respect for tradition. The same could be said of our firm.”

Shutt and Burnette, along with attorney Janet Rhodes, will focus on employment law, including employee benefits under laws such as ERISA. Shutt and Burnette both are certified South Carolina specialists in employment law.

McDaniel’s practice will focus on environmental law, including land use, permitting and zoning. She’ll also represent clients in other government issues such as utility rates and condemnation and eminent domain.

Attorney Jax Pavlicek, who holds a CIPP/US designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals, will assist clients with a range of privacy issues, from information security to assisting in the event of a data breach.
