Central Carolina Community Foundation Awards $180,900 in Scholarships to SC Students

August 21, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands expert in philanthropy, has awarded 74 scholarships totaling $180,900 to some of South Carolina’s outstanding students.

The Community Foundation manages 41 scholarship funds that provide education opportunities for students across South Carolina. Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria according to the recommendations of the donor. Many of the funds have been established as testaments to the donor’s passion for education and their commitment to a particular community or company.

For example, the Harmon Scholarship, new to the Foundation this year, was established to help students realize the American Dream. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating high school senior from Sumter County who demonstrates exceptional personal character and serves as a role model for others. The scholarship covers tuition, room and board and any other educational expenses the student needs for the year.

Another fund, the First Choice Member Scholarship, was established by Select Health of Carolina for members of its First Choice health plan. First Choice improves health through education, preventive care and effective disease management. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Select Health’s mission is to help people get care, stay well and build healthy communities. Since establishing the scholarship through the Foundation, this scholarship has funded nine scholarships totaling more than $18,000.

“Our scholarship funds are just one of the many ways that donors in our community work with the Foundation to make a difference in the Midlands,” said Foundation President and CEO JoAnn Turnquist. “Through the generosity of our fundholders, these students now have the opportunity to achieve their academic goals without the financial burden that often accompanies a college education. We congratulate each of our scholarship recipients and wish them well as they continue to learn and grow.”

Central Carolina Community Foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2016-2017 school year in January 2016. For more information about applying for scholarships or establishing a scholarship fund at the Foundation, please visit www.yourfoundation.org or call 803.254.5601.
