Fort Jackson welcomes new command sergeant major

The Army Training Center and Fort Jackson will welcome Command Sgt. Major Jerimiah E. Gan as its new command sergeant major in a change of responsibility ceremony at 1 p.m.July 20, at the Solomon Center.

Gan will assume responsibility from Command Sgt. Maj. Lamont Christian. He will be the senior enlisted advisor to the Army Training Center and Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr. In civilian terms, Beagle’s position is similar to a company chief executive officer and Gan’s is similar to a chief operating officer. He will carry out polices and standards and advise the CEO on performance, training, appearance and conduct of enlisted Soldiers. He will also assess morale of the force and assists during critical events.

Gan, a native of Croker, Missouri, entered the Army in 1997 as a combat engineer after graduating from Croker High School.

His first leadership role was as a team leader and then squad leader for the 5th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Next, he completed a tour of duty in Korea with the 2nd Engineer Battalion and then returned to Fort Leonard Wood, where he was again assigned to 5th Engineer Battalion and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the spring of 2003.

Later, Gan became a drill instructor with the 35th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood before moving to Fort Benning, Georgia in 2006 to serve as a platoon sergeant in Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. In 2007, Gan served as the company’s first sergeant while the unit deployed to Iraq’s Diwaniyah Province and during the unit’s second to Najaf, Iraq as part of one of the first Advise and Assist Brigades.

In 2010, Gan served as first sergeant in Alpha Company, 31st Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood. In July 2012, he became the Engineer Regiment and 1st Engineer Brigade Chief Instructor at the Sapper Leader Course and two years later was assigned as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major of the 326th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. He was part of the unit leadership as they deployed in support of Operation United Assistance in West Africa. Gan’s last job before coming to Fort Jackson was as the 1st Engineer Brigade Command Sergeant Major.

Gan’s military education includes: U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy Class 64, First Sergeants Course, U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School, Long Range Surveillance Leaders Course, Sapper Leaders Course, Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Battle Staff Course, Master Resilience Course, and Drill Sergeant Academy.

Gan’s awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation medal with Valor, Army Commendation medal, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Sapper Leader Tab, Ranger Tab, and The Corps of Engineers Bronze de Fleury Medal.

Gan is married with four children. He is the oldest of six children and the son of retired Command Sgt. Maj. Richard and Debbie Gan.
