Henry Ford’s amazing secret

Waste not, want not was Ben Franklin’s famous saying.
He first published it in “Poor Richard’s Almanac.”
Revolutionary auto maker Henry Ford practiced it.
In the 1920s, Ford introduced the assembly line.
He automated his process to speed it up and cut costs.
His workers turned out autos at an astounding rate.
It made his cars affordable to the average family.

It also created an enormous amount of by-product.
This included metal, chemicals and leather scraps.
Early Ford cars contained lots of wood.
The wood scraps and sawdust kept piling up.
Ford didn’t throw it out. He made it valuable.
Here was the process he developed:
• The wooden waste was ground to make a sticky pulp.
The pulp was then baked in an oven at 1400 degrees.
Without oxygen, it dried but didn’t burn.
• Next, the dried pulp was mixed with low-quality coal.
That helped the finished wood burn evenly.
• It was then mixed with limestone and starch.
• Next, it was pressed into uniform briquette shapes.
Then, the little shapes were heated and hardened.
• Finally they were packed in moisture-resistant bags.
The result was a dependable man-made coal.

Ford sold it as what he called charcoal briquettes.
It was a huge success for outdoor grilling.
Ford gained a new revenue stream and a monopoly.
Today, Ford controls 80% of the briquette market.
Yet Henry Ford took his name off the briquettes.
He renamed them for a relative, E.G. Kingsford.
Kingsford had helped him develop the process.
