Creating thought-provoking illustrations turned golden for talented Lexington County School District One Senior E. Clarke Wilson. A Lexington High student, she received a gold medal from Scholastic Corporation through its Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program for her drawing, “Send Back.” As a gold medal winner, she received an invitation to a ceremony to be held at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 8, 2017.

More than 330,000 middle- and high-school students entered original work. Only the top one percent, however, received a gold or silver medal from Scholastic Corporation. This year, 60 student artists from South Carolina earned a gold or silver medal for illustrations, pottery, fiction and poetry.

A tradition since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards previously recognized renowned talents such as Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Robert Redford.
