SC Chamber announces 2019 Business Week Scholarship Recipients

Four High School Students Recognized At SC Chamber’s Business Week

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce today announced the recipients of South Carolina Business Week’s scholarships following the 36th session of SC Business Week, which took place July 21-26, 2019. Each year, Business Week offers bright, young adults the unique opportunity to interact with business leaders and likeminded peers. This year’s program was held at the Darla Moore School of Business on the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia and 113 students successfully completed the program.

Below are the scholarship recipients.

S. Hunter Howard Jr. Scholarship

Jalen Canada won the S. Hunter Howard, Jr. Scholarship for $5,000. He is a 2019 graduate of Airport High School in West Columbia, SC. This award recognizes a Business Week student who consistently demonstrates exceptional leadership abilities and was introduced in 2008 in honor of S. Hunter Howard Jr., a retired president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.

Ron McNair Leadership Award

Zakarra Brown was awarded the Ron McNair Leadership Award for $5,000. She is a rising Senior at Wilson High School in Florence, SC. This scholarship, contributed by Dominion Energy, was established in memory of Lake City native and astronaut Ron McNair. The award recognizes a Business Week student who consistently demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities.

Mechanical Contractors Association of South Carolina Scholarship

Molly Brackett won the Mechanical Contractors Association of SC Scholarship for $2,500. She is a rising senior at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, SC. This award, now in its fourth year, may be used at any South Carolina college or university of the student’s choice.

Chelse Ward Elliott Scholarship

Ronald King II was awarded the Chelse Ward Elliott Scholarship for $2,000. He is a rising Senior at Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, SC. This scholarship is presented in memory of Chelse Ward Elliott, the wife of longtime Business Week company advisor Tony Elliott.

In addition to the scholarship recipients, the Chamber also recognized the 2019 Business Week Student CEOs. These students were selected by their peers to lead their companies to victory.
