Webster University’s South Carolina Counseling Program receives CACREP Accreditation

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) – the primary organization in the United States that sets the standards for counseling education – accredited Webster University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program for its Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Columbia locations in South Carolina, it was announced this week. Webster’s accreditation in South Carolina was certified through October of 2027.
CACREP-approved degrees are increasingly becoming sought after in the United States, especially in South Carolina where the South Carolina Department of Mental Health recently reported that out of the 725 public schools in the state, only 390 have mental health counselors.
“We are delighted that CACREP has confirmed that Webster’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program in South Carolina belongs among the ranks of the other superior CACREP-approved institutions in the country,” said Muthoni Musangali, chair of the Department of Professional Counseling. “There is a growing national demand for more mental health counselors across the United States, and our program offers relevant and market-responsive training that prepares our students for finding the best jobs in their respective fields.”
Webster University began seeking CACREP accreditation for its counseling programs nearly eight years ago after it became clear that industry standards for counseling were changing nationally and more employers were demanding CACREP certification for programs. Webster earned accreditation for its home campus in St. Louis in 2016 and immediately began working on the process for its South Carolina locations immediately afterward. The Board of Directors for CACREP met July 11 – 13 to review accreditation applications and notified Webster of its successful efforts on July 26.
“The accreditation process includes site visits from faculty from other institutions, intensive curriculum reviews, and detailed evaluations that measure programmatic and individual outcomes to make sure students are receiving the highest quality of instruction available in the field,” said Anton Wallner, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “We are pleased to again have CACREP confirm that we offer counseling programs that continue to be at the forefront of the field and prepare our students to be leaders in the profession.”
