New restaurant Tempest coming soon to Market Street

Design to Feature Local Artist
The 5th Street Group is pleased to announce that its newest restaurant concept, Tempest, is scheduled to open in August on Charleston’s historic Market Street. Featuring a simple, elegant approach to sustainable South Atlantic seafood, this upscale restaurant hopes to make a bold impact with its menu, hospitality and stunning interiors.
“With each of our restaurant projects, our goal is to create an environment that is equal parts immersive, inspiring and satisfying. We believe that Tempest will be no different, and the 5th Street Group cannot wait to welcome our first guests,” says Patrick Whalen, owner of Tempest.
Tempest will feature a one-of-a-kind, 700-square-foot stained-glass mosaic that will be suspended from the restaurant’s ceiling. Hand-crafted by local Charleston artist Honey McCrary, these panels are estimated to include over 100,000 pieces of glass, designed and fit together to tell a captivating story. The restaurant’s seafaring design is inspired by and pays homage to the rich history of the building, originally constructed in 1916 as the Harriott Pinckney Home for Sailors, a boarding house for merchant marines to stay during a stopover in the Holy City.
Tempest
Housed in the former Harriott Pinckney Home for Sailors in Charleston’s Market Street district, Tempest pays homage to the location’s rich history, offering guests local and sustainable seafood cooked over charcoal. 5th Street Group
Charlotte Business Journal’s Most Admired CEO recipient Patrick Whalen, Alejandro Torio and Top Chef Alum Jamie Lynch of 5th Street Group began in 2012 with the opening of 5Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. The group went on to open 5Church Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015 and Sophia’s Lounge in Charlotte in 2017. In 2020, they plan to open Tempest restaurant in Charleston.
