Hartness expands agriculture efforts with phase II of The Hartness Farm
May 11, 2022Hartness, an award-winning urban village founded by the Hartness family and located on Greenville’s Eastside, is pleased to announce the launch of phase II of The Hartness Farm. Located within Hartness and organically managed, The Hartness Farm is a state-of-the-art amenity for sustainable farming, community engagement and resident living. The second phase of the farm includes expansion, the addition of chickens, and the introduction of a crop share program for Hartness residents.
“The Hartness Farm has come a long way since it launched last summer and I am very proud of all we have accomplished to reach this next phase and further the Hartness family’s vision for a residential farm amenity that also gives back to Greenville,” said Hartness Farm Manager Stephen McRae. “Great care has gone into growing food on the farm, and we are excited for people to soon enjoy the results of our work.”
P. Allen Smith & Associates, a nationally renowned expert in conservation and sustainability, and Hartness town planner Lew Oliver designed and programmed The Hartness Farm in collaboration with McRae and Mill Village Farm, a local non-profit organization dedicated to transforming communities through fresh food and developing youth leaders for a successful transition into adulthood. The farm amenity serves many functions, including: providing a sustainable food source for the village’s restaurants, which are Village Kitchen and the forthcoming Patterson; granting Hartness residents access to a community garden and special seasonal harvesting events; and offering Hartness the opportunity to partner with Mill Village Farms to provide youth volunteer opportunities and fresh produce for the organization’s FoodShare program. A selection of produce will also be available at the June 10th Fresh Fridays at Hartness event, an open-air market located on Hartness’ Grand Lawn and open to the public.
Phase II of The Hartness Farm will see expansion for more crops from a new production garden and greenhouse, as well as the addition of just over 100 chickens for egg production and the launch of a crop share program for Hartness residents. Spring and summer produce will include cucumbers, leeks, collards, onions, eggplant, squash, radishes and several varieties of kale, tomatoes, beets, and carrots. This is in addition to a wide array of herbs and Flaming Flare peppers, which Hartness’ Executive Chef Tanner Marino will use to create his own hot sauce. During this phase McRae will also begin planting for a fall pumpkin patch and a cut flower garden.
The Hartness Farm is one of many exceptional amenities that are situated throughout Hartness’ 449 acres of land boasting rolling pastures, sparkling lakes, flowing creeks, and lushly canopied woodlands. The design of Hartness adheres to the planning principles of New Urbanism and Town Planner Lew Oliver’s vision for the urban village was to return to the tenets of Traditional Neighborhood Development, whereby neighbors connect with each other through pedestrian connectivity, green spaces, and a mixed-use village center that provides entertainment and daily conveniences.
