Robert “Skeeter” Powell named the 2023 Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award honoree

August 9, 2023

The Barbara Stone Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on supporting visionary and creative programs and initiatives for individuals with disabilities, presented Robert “Skeeter” Powell, of David’s Table, the 2023 Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award, during this year’s Bingo Bash. The award was created in 2022 to honor a contemporary leader who shows the same commitment and spirit as the late Barbara Stone. Stone started the Barbara Stone Foundation in 1991 and made a profound impact throughout her lifetime on the quality of life for people living with disabilities in Greenville County.

Powell founded David’s Table 13 years ago, a Christ-centered non-profit that helps young adults with disabilities socialize through weekly activities and connecting individuals to resources in Greenville and Anderson counties. Annually, David’s Table also hosts a popular camp for individuals with disabilities and their families and organizes weekly events like gardening, art, music and bible studies. Powell also received a $500 donation from The Barbara Stone Foundation to recognize Powell’s work, dedication, and commitment.

“Barbara Stone was a champion for individuals with disabilities, and Skeeter Powell demonstrates that same commitment every day,” said Lara Ceisel, executive director of the Barbara Stone Foundation. “He is a frontline warrior, tirelessly working to bring those living in isolation into the light of public awareness and connecting adults, families, and caregivers to an authentic, supportive community through David’s Table. It was an honor and privilege to present Skeeter with this year’s Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award.”

“Skeeter has been serving and working alongside the disability community for over 25 years,” said Katie Mitchell, Executive Director David’s Table. “He unrelentingly forges forward, making him a true warrior and a formidable advocate! There is no stopping Skeeter’s determination to live each day in service to those in the disability community and to strengthen their faith in God.”
