Urban Wren’s Taylor Montgomery emerges victorious with double “Tomato” award wins

Urban Wren, a culinary standout in the Upstate, is proud to announce that Executive Chef Taylor Montgomery recently clinched not one, but two “tomato” awards this summer.
The Travelers Rest Farmers Market’s tomato sandwich taste-off was the first win for Montgomery, where his ‘Black Beauty’ tomato sandwich mesmerized the taste buds of more than 700 tomato aficionados and earned the top spot. The unique black heirloom tomatoes were grown by Chef Taylor – seeds planted by his kitchen team in the garden at his own Montgomery Sky Farm – harvested, and then showcased in this annual taste-off event.
“I am so proud of this award,” said Executive Chef Taylor Montgomery, “it’s fun, but it is also a direct result of my incredible team coming out and planting a variety of tomatoes for the season and then helpingme execute a really cool, really different tomato sandwich.”
“The ‘Black Beauty’ was such a success at the farmer’s market, we decided to offer it as an August feature in therestaurant,” Nick Lincoln, Executive Director of Urban Wren shared. “You can’t beat a $5 tomato sandwich in the
summer!”
Urban Wren’s second win was the Duke’s Mayo Hot Tomato Summer competition – a weeklong celebration of summer’s iconic duo: tomato and mayonnaise. Twenty-five local restaurants competed, and the results of community voting named Montgomery’s Tomato & Chorizo Empanada the winner.
