What is the Small Garden Project?
The South Carolina 4-H Small Garden Project is more than just a gardening venture. Aimed at youth aged 5 to 18, this project provides participants with the chance to establish, maintain, and observe their own small garden throughout the growing season.
What Will You Learn?
Through hands-on experience, participants will gain insight into various aspects of gardening, including:
- Goal Setting: Setting objectives and working towards achieving them.
- Plant Identification: Learning to identify different plant species.
- Pest Management: Understanding and implementing strategies to manage pests.
- Fiscal Responsibility: Managing resources effectively for a successful garden.
How Does It Work?
The project kicks off in May and runs through August 2024. Participants will receive guidance, support, and resources from State and County Extension professionals to help them along their gardening journey. Here’s a breakdown of the registration and rules:
- Registration Deadline: April 5, 2024
- Registration Fee: $25
- Project Kit: Includes seeds, garden supplies, printed, and digital record book, and newsletters.
- Garden Requirements: Participants must maintain a garden plot of at least 50 sq. ft. with four different plant varieties.
- Record Book: Youth will document their progress throughout the project, with age-appropriate guidelines for completion.
- Judging: Participants will be judged based on their record books, with awards sponsored by the SC Master Gardener Program.
