LEC Pay It Forward May 2024: Line Crew Supervisor Makes Generous Contribution to Shriners Hospitals for Children

Line Crew Supervisor Alan “Maybell” Mason paid forward $500 to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Greenville.
Shriners Children’s recently celebrated their 100th year. According to shrinerschildrens.org, “Since opening our first hospital in 1922, we have been devoted to providing high-quality specialty medical care to the children and families who come to us, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status. A century later, our commitment hasn’t changed — only expanded.”
The Greenville campus, established in 1927, is one of 22 hospitals in an international health care system dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs.
Alan says, like many of his fellow linemen, he has a soft heart for children.
“I’m so thankful my own children were healthy, but it’s good to know that a place like this exists for any child who needs it.”
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville provides care for children in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama and surrounding areas.
The 50-bed pediatric orthopaedic facility includes:
- Two operating rooms
- 15 outpatient exam rooms
- An in-house prosthetics and orthotics department
- A motion analysis center
- Physical, occupational and recreational therapy departments
- A KidZone complete with pool tables, video games and air hockey tables
- A handicap accessible playground

The Pay It Forward program began in 2015.
Every Laurens Electric Cooperative employee is entered into a random drawing to receive $500 to pay forward in any way they choose. Each month a new name is drawn, and the employee then has one month to apply the funds toward their own act of kindness.
This initiative is budget-neutral; the funds will come from Laurens Electric’s charity events, which employee volunteers make possible.
Employees and the community will enable individual employees to help individuals in the community, and that’s a win-win situation.
